Hyundai Motor Company is a prominent Korean automobile manufacturer which along with Kia makes up the Hyundai Kia automobile Group. This joint venture was the fourth largest vehicle manufacturer of the world as of 2009. Headquarters of this company are situated in Seoul, South Korea.
It controls the largest integrated vehicle production facility of world in Ulsan and this firm has capacity to produce around 1.6 million units per annum. This automaker employs approximately 75,000 people around the globe. Hyundai automobiles are sold in 193 different countries through some 6,000 franchises and showrooms worldwide.
Hyundai History –
In 1947, Chung Ju-Yung established the Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company.
In 1958, Hyundai established the Keumkang Company for the production of construction materials.
In 1965, the first overseas venture of Hyundai Engineering & Construction began for highway project in Thailand.
In 1967, Hyundai Motor Company was founded by Chung Ju-Yung.
In 1968, this automobile manufacturer unveiled Hyundai’s first model “Cortina”, in co-operation with famous Ford Motor Company.
In 1973, Shipyard of this company was incorporated as the Hyundai Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Company.
In 1974, the new subcompact model which was first independently designed and produced car, introduced at the 55th Turin International Motor Fair.
In 1975, Hyundai launched the first Korean model, the Pony, with powertrain technology offered by Mitsubishi Motors of Japan and styling by Giorgio Giugiaro of ItalDesign.
In 1976, the automaker established as a trading firm. Country’s first Pony car was officially launched in January and this Pony model was the first model which was exported.
In 1983, Hyundai distributed the Pony model to Canada.
In 1984, the company launched the new Excel model.
In 1986, this automaker began to sell its car models in the automobile market of United States and during this year, Hyundai sold 168,882 units. The Hyundai America Technical Center was established in this very same year and also it launched the new luxurious sedan, Azera.
In 1987, the Excel model was awarded as the best-selling subcompact import vehicle in the U.S.A. for 3rd consecutive year.
In 1988, production of the mid-size Sonata model started with the technology of Hyundai.
In 1989, Hyundai unveiled the new mid-size sedan, Sonata.
In 1990, this company founded the Hyundai Design Center in Fountain Valley, California. In the very same year the new Scoupe and Elantra model were launched under Hyundai.
In 1991, the company successfully developed their first proprietary gasoline engine, the four-cylinder Alpha with new transmission. The automaker was also unveiled the new Galloper model.
In 1993, Quebec assembly plant of Hyundai Auto Canada Inc. closed. The Sonata II model was introduced under this brand.
In 1994, this company exceeded around one million units in annual production and in this very same year, it launched the new Accent model.
In 1995, Hyundai unveiled the new Avante model.
In 1996, Hyundai Motors India Limited was founded in the new assembly plant which was situated in Irrungattukotai near Chennai. It also introduced the Tiburon and Dynasty model.
In 1997, the automaker opened their first production plant in lzmit, Turkey. Hyundai launched the new A to Z model.
In 1998, this automobile manufacturer tried to establish itself as the world-class brand. During this year, auto industry of Korea experienced financial crisis due to the Asian financial crisis and overambitious expansion and then the company acquired Kia Motors as a rival. Hyundai launched the new range of Grandeur XG and the EF Sonata.
Hyundai also entered in the F-2 class of the World Rally Championship in the year 1998 and 1999.
In 1999, Chung Ju-Yung transferred leadership of Hyundai Motor Company to his son, Chung Mong Koo. In September, the automaker introduced the new World Rally car, Accent WRC. The Equus, full–size luxury sedan was also launched under this brand.
In 2000, Hyundai launched the all new Santa Fe and the Avante XD models. It was the official partner of the European Football Championship 2000.
In 2001, the company launched the new Accent WRC model with improved reliability. Chung Ju-Yung, Hyundai founder passed away at the age of 86. The new Hyundai Coupe, Tuscani and Lavita and Terracan models were introduced under this brand. Hyundai Motor America achieved J .D. Power & Associates Chairman award.
In 2002, Hyundai was one of the official worldwide sponsors of the FIFA World Cup. The new Elantra model produced in China. It was the established joint venture with famous Beijing Automobile Industry, Holding Company. Hyundai also became the second largest automobile manufacturer in India.
In 2003, the Hyundai Design Center was shifted to the new facility, in Irvine, California and it was known as the Hyundai Kia Motors Design and Technical Center. The new generations of Sonata and Santro models were launched under this brand.
In 2004, the company was positioned at the second position in initial quality. During this year, Hyundai became the second largest corporation of country as it had $57.2 billion in sales. By the end of this year, sales of Hyundai cars improved a lot. Construction of new assembly plant of Hyundai completed. It was the official partner of 2004 UEFA EURO.
In 2005, this automobile manufacturer reached 2,533,695 units and this amount was 11 percent more than the previous year. The Hyundai American Technical Center was shifted in Superior Township, Michigan. In India, the Getz model was named as 2005 Car of the Year. Hyundai Motor Company entered in the list of Top 100 Global Brands.
In 2006, Hyundai exceeded 100 trillion in sales. It was selected as the Best Brand by Chinese automobile industry. Hyundai-Kia Automobile group became the sixth largest automotive manufacturer of world.
In 2007, Hyundai sold 3,961,629 units worldwide. According to the Interbrand and BusinessWeek survey, Hyundai was positioned at the 72nd place in the list of best international brands. At the popular New York International Auto Show, Hyundai launched the new luxurious rear-drive V8 sedan, the Concept Genesis and it also unveiled the Concept Genesis Coupe, the second generation of rear-drive concept car. This company was celebrated its 40th anniversary in this very same year.
During 2008-09, the eco-friendly i-mode concept car was launched under this brand.
In 2008, Hyundai was positioned as the eighth largest automobile manufacturer. The Hyundai Elantra and the Hyundai Santa Fe achieved the Consumer Reports 2008 Top Picks. During this year, the performance-oriented and luxurious version of the Hyundai Genesis sedan and the Hyundai Genesis Coupe were unveiled at North American International Auto Show.
Hyundai established its European production plant in Nosovice, Czech Republic. In the month of November, the latest Hybrid electric Sonata model was launched at famous Los Angeles International Auto Show. During this year, Hyundai Motor India sets up a new record by exceeding 500,000 vehicles in exports. It was ranked at the first position in the list of National Customer Service Index.
In 2009, the luxurious Hyundai Genesis sedan was known as the North American Car of the Year 2009. Around four vehicles of this brand were awarded with the Top Safety award by IIHS. In July, the Elantra LPI Hybrid was introduced in the domestic market of South Korea.
This company participated for the Super US Bowl as a leading sponsor. At the Geneva Motor Show, this automaker introduced the three-door HED-VI i20 concept car. At the Frankfurt Motor Show, the ix35 and ix-Metro models were launched under this brand.
During 2010, this company sold more than 1.7 million automobiles worldwide. The overall revenue of this automaker during this year was around $33.6 billion and the net income is $4.8 billion. The new Hyundai Equus model was introduced at the International North American Auto Show. In this year, Hyundai began its designing operations at R&D Hyderabad Center. More than 700,000 units of passenger cars were sold in Chinese vehicle market.
In the month of October, this automaker signed a deal with Sichuan Nanjun Automotive for production of commercial models and this joint venture was called as, Sichuan Hyundai Motor Co. Ltd. The new Hyundai Blue Will was launched at the 2010 North American International Auto Show, Detroit. In this very same year, Hyundai i-flow was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show 2010.
