From the time when Land Rover and Jaguar were acquired by Tata Motors from Ford Motor Company in the year 2008, intransigent aficionados of Jaguar worried that the Indian automobile manufacturing company may fail to fund stately British marques in pursuit of other projects. The Indian automaker has enabled Jaguar to thrive and grow continually, in spite of tough market situations. Probably, the best demonstration of where Jaguar is going can be found in XKR, a 2+2 luxury vehicle, which is as beautiful as it is bold, providing top down fun rivaling the best of what Europe has to provide worldwide.
The Jaguar XKR generates great power with its V8 supercharged engine and backs it up with grippy, fanatic handling. A Bowers and Wilkins premium surround sound stereo system provides nearly unflappable power and balanced sound. A throaty exhaust and slinky styling makes it nearly as nice to drive as to watch from the outside. The sarcasm is that the XKR’s allure as the most powerful yet fastest production vehicle ever designed by the automaker. It is a contemporary muscle vehicle, one of the few cars, which pulls off the entire retro styling trend without looking ludicrous. Powering the XKR is a 5.0 liter supercharged, brawny V8 engine with maximum output of 500 HP with 500 lbs. ft. of torque. It is a huge coupe featuring rear wheel drive system and providing comfortable seating for up to 2 passengers with comfort. A pair of back seats are best suited to hold small parcels unlike small people.
The Jaguar XKR comes with a sport tuned suspension and large 20 inch wheels and looks striking in black color. It is available for the price of $130,000 and looks a lot like the pricier Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 of the world. Both vehicles have more in common that you may think. The chassis of XKR remains largely unchanged. It accelerates from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in the time range of 4.2 seconds. It weight is within 150 lbs. of the Shelby’s, in spite of its being little longer and wider and much more prestigious inside. The EPA estimated fuel economy for XKR is 22 mpg highway and 15 mpg in city driving.
For beginners, getting this large ol’ Jaguar down to fighting weight is not cheap. The automaker began by redesigning its front dual wishbone suspension, making use of aluminium for stiffening and lightening several parts. The double wishbone, independent suspension setup at the back gains similar treatment. The suspension of Jaguar XKR is more precise and theoretically more complex at the front and back as compared to MacPherson live and strut rear-axle setup of Mustang. The company used carbon fiber for most of the aerodynamic enhancements of XKR such as decklid spoiler, front splitter and rear diffuser. Over the regular XKR-S and XK, the XKR also gets redesigns to its automatic transmission and active suspension programs.
Offered stereo sources include AM/FM/satellite radio, a USB/iPod connection and a six-disc in-dash CD changer. The Jaguar XKR also gets Bluetooth handsfree calling with voice command, but no stereo streaming. The coupe lacked an analog auxiliary input jack; in spite of the fact the company’s materials claim this connection is standard. Without analog audio inputs or Bluetooth, many non-iPhone handsets can't connect to the stereo system for music.
